Introduction

For travelers who love nature, adventure, and breathtaking scenery, Mount Elgon National Park and Sipi Falls offer one of Uganda’s best hiking experiences. Openbill Safaris Uganda takes you on a journey to explore the extinct volcanic mountain, lush montane forests, wildlife, and the iconic three-tiered Sipi Falls – one of the most photographed landmarks in Eastern Uganda.

Whether you’re an experienced trekker or a leisure traveler looking for a moderate adventure, this hike blends culture, landscapes, and unforgettable natural wonders.

Why Hike Mount Elgon?

Mount Elgon, Africa’s 8th highest mountain, straddles the Uganda-Kenya border and boasts the world’s largest volcanic caldera. The park is home to:

  • Diverse wildlife such as forest monkeys, antelopes, and over 300 bird species including the rare Lammergeyer.
  • Unique vegetation zones – from montane forest and bamboo to Afro-alpine moorlands.
  • Spectacular hiking routes like the Sasa Trail, Sipi Trail, and Piswa Trail, offering different levels of difficulty and scenic views.
  • Less crowded treks compared to other mountains in East Africa, making it ideal for peaceful adventures.

Exploring Sipi Falls

Just outside the park lies Sipi Falls, a series of three stunning waterfalls flowing from the slopes of Mount Elgon into the Kyoga Basin. Highlights include:

  • The Main Sipi Falls (100m drop): A breathtaking sight and a perfect spot for photography.
  • Lower and Upper Falls: Scenic cascades hidden in lush greenery, offering great hiking and picnic spots.
  • Cultural encounters: Visit local coffee farmers to learn about Arabica coffee, grown on the fertile volcanic soils.
  • Adventure activities: Besides hiking, you can try abseiling down the waterfall, nature walks, and birdwatching.
